Climate-tech accelerators: a global landscape review

Introduction

Climate change has emerged as one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century, driving unprecedented demand for innovative technologies capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing climate resilience, and supporting sustainable development. In response, climate technology (climate-tech) startups have gained significant attention from investors, policymakers, and development organizations. However, transforming climate innovations into scalable businesses often requires specialized support, leading to the rapid growth of climate-tech accelerators worldwide.

Climate-tech accelerators provide mentorship, technical guidance, pilot-testing opportunities, investor access, and market connections that help early-stage ventures commercialize innovative solutions. These programs have become increasingly important as climate technologies often require longer development timelines and higher capital investment than traditional digital startups.

Growth of Climate-Tech Investment

The climate-tech sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade. According to Dealroom, global climate-tech venture capital funding reached approximately US$38.4 billion in 2025, representing nearly a tenfold increase compared with levels observed five years earlier (Dealroom, 2026). Furthermore, climate-tech remains among the world’s most actively funded innovation sectors despite broader fluctuations in venture capital markets (Dealroom, 2026).

Recent analyses indicate that climate-tech consistently accounts for a substantial share of global venture capital investment, reflecting increasing recognition of the economic and environmental importance of clean technologies (PwC, 2024).

The Rise of Climate-Tech Accelerators

The expansion of climate-tech investment has been accompanied by the emergence of specialized accelerator programs. Unlike conventional startup accelerators, climate-focused programs often combine business development support with expertise in engineering, sustainability assessment, climate policy, and regulatory compliance.

Globally recognized initiatives include programs such as Greentown Labs, Third Derivative, Climate-KIC, Cleantech Open, and regional accelerator networks supporting entrepreneurs in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, circular economy technologies, carbon capture, water management, and climate adaptation. These accelerators help bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and commercial deployment by connecting startups with investors, corporations, researchers, and policymakers.

The growing importance of startup-support ecosystems has also been emphasized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which recognizes climate-tech startups as critical contributors to climate action and sustainable development goals (UNDP, 2025).

Climate-Tech in Emerging Economies

Climate-tech innovation is no longer concentrated solely in North America and Europe. Emerging economies are increasingly developing their own accelerator ecosystems to address local environmental challenges.

According to a 2025 UNDP report, climate-tech startups across Africa have attracted more than US$860 million in equity funding, representing approximately 3.5-fold growth in recent years. The report highlights growing entrepreneurial activity in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, waste management, and climate adaptation technologies across the continent.

Similarly, countries such as India, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Indonesia are witnessing the expansion of accelerator programs that focus on region-specific climate solutions, including water conservation, climate-smart agriculture, clean cooking technologies, and decentralized renewable energy systems.

Challenges Facing Climate-Tech Accelerators

Despite their success, climate-tech accelerators face several challenges. Many climate technologies require significant capital expenditure, lengthy regulatory approvals, infrastructure development, and extended commercialization periods. Venture funding in the sector remains sensitive to economic uncertainty and policy changes.

Industry reports indicate that global climate-tech funding remains below its 2021 peak despite continued investor interest, reflecting broader market adjustments and increasing scrutiny of business viability (Climate Tech Ecosystems Report, 2025).

Furthermore, climate-tech startups often struggle to secure growth-stage financing after completing accelerator programs, particularly in developing countries where venture capital ecosystems remain relatively immature.

Future Outlook

The future of climate-tech accelerators appears promising as governments strengthen climate commitments and industries pursue decarbonization strategies. Increasing demand for solutions in clean energy, sustainable materials, climate adaptation, carbon management, and nature-based technologies is expected to create new opportunities for accelerator-supported ventures.

UNDP’s recent assessments emphasize that innovation ecosystems, startup accelerators, and deep-tech support platforms will play a critical role in achieving sustainable development objectives and accelerating climate action worldwide (UNDP, 2025).

Conclusion

Climate-tech accelerators have become vital components of the global innovation ecosystem. By providing mentorship, funding access, technical expertise, and commercialization support, these programs help transform promising climate solutions into scalable businesses. As climate challenges intensify and demand for sustainable technologies grows, accelerators will continue to play a pivotal role in fostering innovation, supporting entrepreneurship, and advancing global climate goals.
